Typographic Workshop of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar. An Industrial Heritage to Safeguard and EnhanceReference: CFPI2021/04 |
The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar's typographic workshop holds a unique collection within the landscape of higher education institutions and similar workshops in Portugal. This industrial heritage originates primarily from the Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, the national public institution responsible for producing official identification documents, coinage, and the publication of official state documents for several centuries. The typographic collection includes a variety of manual and mechanical composition materials, such as Monotype, Linotype, and Ludlow typesetting equipment and matrices, as well as proofing and printing equipment. Beyond its patrimonial value as a composition and printing process, typography embodies significant values across various dimensions, including pedagogical, artistic, and cultural aspects. Its current use is predominantly by IPT students, but there is a vision to open this living heritage to local, national, and international communities, whether specialized or not, in the near future. Accordingly, this project aims to safeguard and enhance this heritage while also reinforcing its associated social pillar. |
